With the goal of becoming energy neutral by 2023, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago partnered with GE for a demonstration project to evaluate GE's ZeeLung* Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor technology. The test is performed at the district’s O'Brien Water Reclamation Plant in Skokie, Illinois, to prove ZeeLung’s ability to remove nutrients in the plant’s existing footprint and reduce the energy required for biological aeration by up to 40 percent. The membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) process is an innovative technology that enables the upgrade of conventional activated sludge plants for nutrient removal and capacity expansion while significantly reducing the energy required for aeration. MABR intensifies treatment capacity and improves treatment performance by increasing the biomass inventory in a given reactor volume. The MABR process employs a gas transfer membrane to deliver oxygen to a biofilm that is attached to the surface of the membrane. The product is deployed as a cassette into an existing activated sludge tank. Oxygen is delivered to the biofilm by diffusion through the membrane to maintain aerobic conditions in the biofilm. The suspended biomass surrounding the membrane cassettes is controlled to anoxic conditions so that simultaneous nitrification and denitrification is performed in the reactor (nitrifiction in the aerobic biofilm and denitrification in the anoxic suspended biomass). Because oxygen is delivered by diffusion directly to a biofilm, the energy required for oxygen delivery is reduced by up to 4X compared to conventional aeration. The ZeeLung product leverages GE’s greater than 25 years of experience with manufacturing membrane-based products for wastewater treatment applications. The result is a robust product that is engineered for the conditions in a wastewater treatment plant. To learn more, click http://bit.ly/2ferFdE

Cataract Laser Surgery is the most commonly practiced procedure to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors including myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It is a procedure that most eye doctors are familiar with. It reduces risks of anything going wrong as the procedure itself is quick and painless. The Eye Institute of West Florida offers numerous benefits and can dramatically improve the quality of life of a person as most people achieve 20/20 vision or better after the surgery. To know more about Eye Institute of West Florida visit: http://www.cataractsurgeons.com Cataract surgery is the only way to correct cataracts. The procedure involves the removal of the clouded lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens. It is a simple and safe procedure with a very high success rate. The procedure itself usually lasts only 5 to 8 minutes. How well you see after surgery will vary. Outcomes can depend on lens selection, OR technology, and the surgeon's experience. Here at the Eye Institute of West Florida we specialize in providing cataract patients custom lens options that are designed to help them see clearly at all ranges of distance without the aid of glasses and contacts all the time. Because every eye is uniquely different, we offer a multitude of specialty lenses that meet the custom need of each individual patient. Our operating rooms are equipped with the world's finest vision systems. It is quite possible we are the only facility with not one, but two femtosecond cataract laser units and among very few ambulatory surgery centers in the United States with a real-time refraction system. With these newer innovations we are able to perform cataract surgery with computer precision, replacing cataracts with advanced lenses, correcting astigmatism with more accuracy and precision, all without the need for sutures. These newer technologies will help you see clearer and reduce your recovery time. Because Dr. Stephen Weinstock and Dr. Robert Weinstock and their esteemed colleagues here at the Eye Institute are involved in the development of many of these newer technologies, we are the first to use these innovations before they were made available in the general market. Never mind that the city police department does not have a drone, nor has it suggested buying one. The police are not barred from using drones for other efforts, like search and rescue. Mr. Norris said the advent of new policing technologies poses new policy dilemmas for his city. Charlottesville permits the police to install cameras temporarily in areas known for drug dealing, but it has rebuffed a police request to install cameras along its downtown shopping corridor. It has also chosen not to install cameras at traffic lights to intercept speeding cars, as is common elsewhere. “Drones are capable of taking surveillance to a whole new level,” Mr. Norris said. Last week, the Seattle Police Department agreed to return its two still-unused drones to the manufacturer after Mayor Michael McGinn answered public protests by banning their use On Thursday, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in Oakland, Calif., listened to the county sheriff’s proposal to use federal money to buy a four-pound drone to help his officers track suspected criminals — and then listened to raucous opposition from the antidrone lobby, including a group that uses the Twitter handle @N.O.M.B.Y., short for Not Over My Back Yard. This week, member of congress introduced a bill that would prohibit drones from conducting what it called “targeted surveillance” of individuals and property without a warrant. A federal law enacted last year paved the way for drones to be used commercially and made it easier for government agencies to obtain them. The Department of Homeland Security offered grants to help local law enforcement buy them. Drone manufacturers began to market small, lightweight devices specifically for policing. Drones are already used to monitor movement on the United States’ borders and by a handful of police departments, and emergency services agencies Keyword film connection technology documentary good documentaries addiction to technology science documentry the best science documentaries documentary website best documentary sites best documentaries best science documentaries new science documentaries documentary on science new documentaries science documentaries online best online documentaries great science documentaries free download documentaries documentaries about education technology addiction documentary science documentary history educational documentaries

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - There are 56 schools in the Cincinnati Public School district. It's the largest district in the Tri-State covering 91 square miles. Kids heading to seven of those schools on Wednesday morning will find some new, unique high-tech opportunities. Last year, Cincinnati Public Schools officials surveyed parents, staff, and community members to find out what improvements they wanted to see in the district. The number one priority was strengthening neighborhood schools by putting in specialized programming. On Wednesday, that long term plan goes into effect at schools like the West End’s Hays-Porter School, which now has a “high technology” focus. "I don't think that students today know a time when technology was not a part of their lives," said Hays-Porter Principal Nedria McClain. Technology is such an integral part of the world today that kids who don't know how to use it can be left behind. "There's your traditional way of learning using pens, pencils, and books, but here at Hays-Porter School they have a new vision: Using technology to prepare their students for the future,” said Principal McClain. The “High Technology Program” is part of Cincinnati Public School's “Vision 2020” program. "The students right now, are consumers of technology, by coming to Hays-Porter High Tech, with our technology focus, they will not only be consumers, but they will become creators of technology,” said Principal McClain. They'll have daily 90-minute blocks of reading and math using a blended learning method, and 30 minutes of teacher-led instruction, online programming, and project-based learning. First and second graders will be given tablets to use at school. Students in third through sixth grade will have laptops. Students will be taught programming, robotics, and coding. "What they're doing now, people are going to be doing 10, 15 years down the road and they're going to say I’ve done that, I’ve been doing that for years. So, I really think it's a great opportunity for them,” said Patrick Wilde, who is a 2nd-grade teacher. The “high technology” focus is especially important at Hays-Porter, where a large number of students do not have access to the internet at home. "By using technology as a tool, it will enhance learning,” said Principal McClain. “The students will be engaged and when they're engaged it will ignite their curiosity, it will inspire and empower them to take charge of their learning and their future.” Everyone is invited to enjoy an afternoon of “TNT or “Trying New Technology.” A ribbon cutting will be held Wednesday afternoon from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
